Publishing a research paper is way more complicated than it should be.

I really hate that journals are so expensive to subscribe to. It's research, ffs, why should it be so difficult and expensive to keep up with the latest in any field? I love what arXiv is doing for that (also some uh...third party services).

@RememberMe well I settled on JOSS for various reasons. Open access :)

PLoS and BioMed Central charge $1,350–2,250 for a peer-reviewed research paper. Or there's an extra fee to make your papers available without subscription. Respectable journals often warn the authors and writers about this beforehand in an email or personal chat.
