I resigned yesterday to focus on my business full time. After 5 years and 1 previous failed attempt to leave the company, its finally done.

My boss threw his toys out of the pram and was borderline abusive about the whole thing. "it's like a kick in the balls" "you've clearly been planning this (said in an accusatory tone)" "you've said you were leaving before which is why you have 3 months notice now (to which my response was, and that is why I am giving you 3 months notice?!)"

Along with many other comments and general angry tone.

Honestly, I couldn't sleep the night before as I was so nervous. We're a small company and to some degree, a kind of family so I didn't want to break that. The more he spoke though, the easier it got. It simply cemented by decision to leave. They made no attempt to keep me. Showed no support. No gratitude for my 5 years of service. Nothing.

Well, you will be down your only dev in 3 months so good luck, I suspect you'll need it more than I will.

@Voxera indeed it was. Been holding out for 3 months to make sure I get paid to the end of the year!

    Thank you!

@Jaspreet3480 sorry to hear that. It will make leaving all that much better though. Onwards and Upwards.

@Jaspreet3480 If they treat you badly after accepting your resignation, its extremely unprofessional behaviour on their side. Resigning is a personal choice, and must be respected like other personal things.
If they had an issue like not enough time for training the new recruit, they should've discussed it with you and handled the situation gracefully.

    — You've clearly been planning this!
    — Of course I've been planning this, that's usually how one quits a job. Would've it been less of a kick in the balls if I just decided to quit a moment ago for no reason?

@ethernetzero Ikr. I think that comment is what got to me the most. Do you think that little of me that I'm that stupid?!

    Youve got this!

    wait...

    3 months
    45 days

what?? What is the policy/law out there?

We only have ~3 weeks notices and that's it. 3 months sounds like a loooong time! A quarter of a year?

    "You've been planning this"

That's my favorite part, like, duh

@HighTurtleDev You have 3 months to make random Doctor Evil comments in response to stupid statements they make. Also, you can refer to whoever you train as mini-me.

Your former boss is worrying about this now, not you. Assfuckingtosserhole that he is...

@Demolishun yes this is genius! Who knows when they will hire a replacement.. I'm the only dev so eh...

@bols59 he can worry all he likes! :)

@netikras standard is usually 1 month. I tried to leave 18 months ago but decided it wasn't the right time so had to agree to a 3month notice period so if I decided to leave they had enough time to find my replacement as I'm the sole dev. They also wanted to try and make it harder for me to leave. Didn't work though 🤣

Your boss sounds like a total dick lol. I mean, could you have been any more accommodating about the departure? Some people just can't think about anything except how the world affects them personally, and everything is an attack. Good luck to you and good riddance to him, I'd say

@Jaspreet3480 Sorry to hear that hope u fight it :)

It was a family? Bitch, it's a job, no one give a FUCK about you there. You make X, the company and your boss make 10X using your work.

@AurumMan79 This can really, really depend on the company. I quit my job recently and I still hop by sometimes to say hi, grab a coffee and fuck around with my old boss and the guys because I, in some way, do see them as some kind of family :)

(boss did his very best to keep me (in a good way) but respected my decision to leave)

A funny turn of events. An apology from the boss in question and a retainer signed so they keep me for 4 days a month for almost the same money as I was earning full time. They've decided not to hire someone else and to just outsource to me. Essentially just trippled the hourly rate they currently pay me 😏
