That, my friends, is a Dell Poweredge r610, with 2x e5670 and 48GB of registered ECC memory, mounted underneath my desk at work, using mounts I 3D printed at home.

Roughly £140 all in, and I now have a nice little development server, AND leg heater!

    48gb ram for £140? That's insane

@ScriptCoded technically £130, it took 20 hours to print the mounts, plus the cost of some screws.

DDR3 ECC RDIMMs are cheap as hell, especially when they come in a refurbished server.

I didn't factor in the cost of the two WD Green 250gb SSDs I put in there as I just had them lying around at work. Even factoring those in, the whole server only cost £200.

I'm tired and put e5670, when I meant x5670. Doh.

    Can you post your hinges?

@NonImportant- these are the ones I used

    https://thingiverse.com/thing:12584...

Printed using a Davinci XYZ at highest settings, from PLA. Mine is modified with a heating plate to make sure the layers set together properly.

I used two of the "ears" for the front, and four of the ones that support it from underneath. Two in the middle, two at the back.

Had to flip the unit upside down as air intakes/exhausts are on the top.

@irene it's really not that loud under normal loads. About 50dba from above the desk.

Start throwing harder computational tasks and it hits a peak of about 70dba. Same on boot, but only for like, 5 seconds.

@SirusAmory how did you append them to the desk?
  • 2
@NonImportant- Panhead woodscrews. Two in each.

@irene yeah, desk builds always end up costing more and taking more time than they're really worth. They do look slick as hell when done well though.

@SirusAmory How do you get hold of such cheap SSDs???
  • 2
    @ScriptCoded Amazon. £28.20 each currently.

Gone are the days of £1 per GB my friend.

@SirusAmory Weoooowwww... Closest Amazon is DE so I never ordered from there. But perhaps I should give it a go then

@ScriptCoded they seem to be available for 449kr on webhallen.se

Looks like prices in Sweden are just generally higher than over here :(
  • 5
@SirusAmory Guess so 🤷🏻‍♂️ Webbhallen tends to have pretty good prices, so yeah... Oh well :)

A leg heater in summer seems not that great 😄
  • 2
    @Lensflare yeah, it's not ideal currently 😅

@Nanos Why need that absurd amount of RAM though? I could only see myself using half of that at most.
  • 1
@Nanos ...don't you need a good GPU for training though? Other than the integrated chip that the server has, I don't think it'll be that efficient.

@irene Te main reason I dont own one :(
  • 2
that's actually a very good idea! Using blade's thinness like that!

    Hats off!

I feel like you gonna get your dick electrocuted when it gets hard

@Nanos A couple of my clients servers are capable of about 2TiB of memory (they use like 96GB atm), but damn, 16TB is insane.

@nam17887 I feel like wherever you work, I do not want to work there. Or anywhere near there.

And... what motorcycle do you ride?
  • 2
@cprn I completely forgot my boots were in the picture, so this came off as very creepy for a few seconds until I realised.

Where did you buy such a server?!
  • 1
@Kyngo the magical land of eBay ;)

@SirusAmory I kind of still want to know what you riding, my man... I recently switched from MT-07 to XSR900 purely out of vain - she prettier. 😎
