Just 4 days in at my first job after recently graduating and I already love my workplace. Everyone in the office is so lively and giggly that you'll hear good jokes and genuine laughs thrown around the place EVERYDAY. People are so friendly and outgoing that I just realised I had made so many friends in a short time despite my introvertedness. To scale; you probably heard or experienced yourself that Filipino communities are generally super friendly and possitive. Well as a Filipino, I can attest that this is on a whole other level.

Damn. Too bad I can't remember all their names tho. 😂

Then there are a ton of perks like free food, gym, etc. And then I met this attractive and fun girl my age who I think and hope is into me, idk. We hang out with her 2 other friends, all four of us being relatively new at the company, separated by a month or so.

This is the best experience I had in such a long time and I'm super excited to see where this leads to.

Totally can relate to this apart from the fun attractive girl part lol. Is this like a small start up company? Coz i'm in a place for 6 months now and the environment is sick, everyones fun and genuine. Its good to be working around these kinda people who also support with sincerity.

@legacy07 I know right?! I don't think our company's a startup. It's pretty much well established with clients from F500. Though I think non-startup companies with genuine fun environments tend to be rare, so I guess I'm lucky.

@rutee07 Can't blame you. I can relate since I've been that kinda person, just that I now want to try out being different from my usual self. Btw, thanks!

Tip Do NOT date a coworker. A friend of mine dated a guy she works with and they cant even say "hi" to eachother anymore. There was a group of twenty people hanging out regularly and after they broke up (two months later) that one group broke apart and people chose sides.

@Codex404 I think that depends on how well couples handle conflict. I'd rather drop my ego and give way to resolve our conflict no matter how rational I think I am than ruin even the friendship of our friends.

@specialCardinal that is true but you wont know until its to late... Tbh of those two the one I expected to be the most mature around it was the least mature spreading lies to not be made the badman

@sam21s Thanks! Of course, but honestly I don't think I have the balls to even try. (And yes, I am such a noob.) 😭

I'm a white boy from New York City. I worked around many Filipinos starting around 1990. When they would cheeze-meese, I'd ask them how to pronounce a certain phrase or sentence. I'd spell it phonetically on a post it and keep the note attached to my computer all day. I did this in enough workplaces that I have a decent command of Tagalog. And I've noticed that when I'm with somebody from the Philipines and it's a customer service situation, I start speaking Tagalog and the whole atmosphere becomes very friendly. Congrats on the experience of your new job.

@bols59 Thanks! And interesting sidestory. I guess learning a country's native language really is a must to fully interact with the locals without barriers and experience their culture more genuinely.

@specialCardinal not for the netherlands. Over here people start talking to you in English as soon as you struggle a little bit with Dutch since for most dutchies it's easier to talk in English then try to decipher what someone is saying in three quarters dutch. Either talk dutch well or talk in english is the general concensus over here.

But I also talk mainly English with my friends.

    Good to hear.

Hopefully they don’t have “Bring your fluffy pet to work Fridays”. Uggg!

@Codex404 But doesn't it feel different when speaking english versus in dutch? Because in our country, speaking purely in english can change the atmosphere into something of a formal or professional vibe. And you can't expect cultural immersion with that kinda atmosphere in the way.

@CaptainKirk Yeah, I don't think they allow pets in our office. But as someone who's yet to experience such, what makes it a bad thing?

That’s a “new” concept a lot of large companies, and small start-ups are adopting. I think Google started it. As fun as it may sound, I feel for those who are allergic to cats, and the smell is pretty bad at times. No work gets done cause everyone is attending to their pets. Pets get loose. Pets have fought. Ours was canceled earlier this year after a co-worker got bite by a Yorkie.

@specialCardinal It’s going to be tough cause you are young and not wise to the ways of the world yet. You need the experience to learn what’s up.

In need of gaining experience, I encourage you to further a romantic relationship with your female co-workers. About 10%, you will find love. About 20% you find yourself in bed with them. About 50% it will not work out and it becoming extremely awkward, resulting in you being the problem or the bad person in the end. About 30% chance you will get assigned as the sex-offender of the office, either being asked to leave or want to get the hell out. See guys like you all the time, and they say the same things. Lol

About ten years from now, you find the value in the separation of personal and work life. Especially if you move up. Good luck.

@CaptainKirk I see. And thanks for the advise, especially that last one! I actually already felt that I need to separate as much as possible my personal life from work and am starting out by creating and using separate accounts for work so that work-related stuff stays only at the office.

Good to hear man. These are the years that will shape your future. Learn as much now, good and bad, and you will be that much ahead.

It’s the stupid stuff they don’t teach in the classroom or at the university that will impact your momentum and growth with advancement. You need to diff that sweet-spot between introvert and office dumbass.

The other thing I see more and more is people, mainly young men, make the mistake of confusing the legalization revolution of marijuana use and the office place being a pulpit from which to express their pride. Since when has it become acceptable to tell your superior about the awesome gummy’s you had last weekend? All well and good, but I know people who have been passed up for literally wearing their marijuana use on your sleeve. Don’t trust anyone with stuff like this, no matter how close you get.

@specialCardinal no, Ive had classmates and we switched languages back and forth during a single conversation without really noticing. But if someone else comes by and asks why do you switch languages we do know we did, though it happens without reason.

The way I see it if you break up it's cool.

Just be the chill one about it. Don't be weird and avoid her or keep on trying to get back together. Don't comment on it, or bring it up, just move on. Be a professional with your ex's, same as any other co-worker.

Work place romances can work, just don't be messy about it when the romance ends.
