The biggest problem with PHP is that it's easy to pick up making it accessible to people that enjoy writing shit code.

Use Symfony with Doctrine and Twig and you'll love php again. You even get Annotation support added to php with this framework 😍

Not to mention the solid dependency injection that they copied from Java
