If you mean to open some router's port and use it remotely then no. For a home server to use only via LAN why not, but you're wasting a screen.

Personal use, non internet connection - go for it, otherwise god no.

What sort of environment are we looking at here? home use and just for shits and giggles? if so, go for it.

If you're wanting to have any sort of reliability, actual servers are pretty cheap online. you can get them for next to nothing if it's last gen.

If you don't need a lot of power a laptop would be a waste of energy.

I use a Raspberry Pi as NAS, Testing Webserver, FM Station, VPN and light background Tasks that take long (e.g. downloading stuff).

But a laptop should be a good entry. Depends on your workload.

@LinusCDE How's that working out for you? had to replace the SD card much? Or are you running a samba/NFS share from a usb drive? I suppose it depends on how many changes you make to the info on the SD card though. Don't think SD cards support TRIM though. If you don't already, keep backups on a separate storage medium if it's the SD card. They can be a pain to recover.

@LinusCDE very nice, mind sharing your setup?

@GreatGrogrodor I've hooked up a 4TB NAS HDD to the RPi using an external usb case.
The HDD can't be used to it's full potential, but it's enough for me.
I use NFS zo access it.

@telephantasm You buy a Raspberry Pi and a micro SD card.
Then put Raspian on your SD using Win32Disk Imager or Etcher.
Create a file called "ssh" (no extension) on the Partition called BOOT (seen like a USB stick), put that SD into the RPi and connect some MicroUSB to it.
You either can hook up a Keyboard, (Mouse) and TV to it or use LAN to connect to the RPi using Putty.

There are plenty of tutorials on how to do it on the Web and also a lot of Projects (Blog or YT-Vids) that are really nice.
