Is it usual to not be allowed to use headphones/earbuds at work?

We cant at our offfice atleast. The explination was that IF clients come by the offfice it looks like we are having a lan party! 😂

Really? Unless you really like your job, get a new one. Places with stupid rules like this are usually no good.

Without headphones I would not be able to join conference calls. That policy would be a nonstarter right away for me.

@olback I've seen this rule also when I worked on a local graphic design place. A fkin graphic design job where I can't listen to music to do art. I got out of that work because of that exact problem, I was getting sleepy at 10AM, after only 1hr of being alone in a silent office. Not possible for me.

Because of this rule, I didn't join a company I was eyeing on. Saw a review on Glassdoor that they don't allow usage of headphone and some other bullshit rules.

Yeah, I have been approached many times for a job with a competing company, and ruled them out out of hand because of quality of life issues like this. Restricted network usage, dress code, headphone use, car culture, windows, draconian work-from-home policy, etc. If I'm in need of a job, I will loosen up on these issues, but I absolutely will not switch jobs to a company that abides them from where I am now.

I don't even get it. Wearing a suit, wearing headphones, no cell-phones. Ugh. I just don't get it. Are these fucking managers non-IT people? What the fuck do they think this is? Retail? Insurance selling? PR? WHAT THE FUCK? We don't deal with any-fucking-body, but the computer in front of us. Most of us don't even go to the fucking demos, so suits make no sense. Jesus...

Yeah, having to use a car to get to work, and little accommodation or consideration, if any, for people who would prefer not to drive.

It's very often because the office is located in a far-flung place that's really only accessible by vehicle. I count that in car culture, as a great number of people (probably the majority) wouldn't think twice about it, and would be jarred to hear that it's inconvenient, or even difficult for someone. I have worked these jobs before, and spent years doing so, and I hated the driving, and I hated the impact on the environment this had from hundreds of people making the drive every day. The bitter irony too is that several of these far-flung locations were touted as being, "green," through some official standard of environmental sustainability("LEED" here in the US) which was of course completely obviated by the hundreds of hours of combustion engine run time required to get all the employees there and back every day.

But like I said, I've worked these jobs before, because when push comes to shove, I prioritize my own livelihood above environmental concerns. I know that about myself, and it makes me mad. I have been extremely fortunate for the last six years to have a commute that is 100% car-free. I ride my bike to the train station and take the train downtown to get to work. It's a colossal quality of life issue for me, and it will take either a really attractive offer or great hardship to get me to take a job without it.

This used to be the case in my workplace a few years back for all employees.

I was the most senior person on site for the Devs so I allowed them to wear ear phones and no one could really argue with me. It was an open plan noisy office and I want going to deny them anything that would unnecessary distract them.

The company has since trialled and allowed the rest of the workforce to wear earphones as they saw productivity went up when they did.
