Both are subsets of SGML (except for HTML5), tho HTML wasn't 100% valid SGML until HTML4.
So both are valid SGML, but HTML4 is not valid XML. -
Sumafu21906yIn HTML5 this is unfortunately true. But I try to write valid XHTML. In this case it is also valid XML, and much more readable.
