Just like the language usage itself, it depends.

    I just say SQL ?

this is how I see it, you have two choices:

    1) go with the one everyone uses, sequel
    2) try to be a smarty pants or troll and nitpick on the fact that it's more correct to say sql, es-kyu-el, even when practically no one does that

the same for saying gif with a jay

Actually I have not met one person in Germany that says Sequel. Everyone said it like es-ku-el (Changed it to German pronunciation)

I agree that we Germans are a weird bunch of people...

I've only met a few people who say "sequel" -- and many of them were nontechnical. In my experience, saying "SQL" is significantly more common here in the States.

@Root my experience was completely opposite, interesting
  • 8
I don't pronounce initialisms, I just say the letters
  • 3
It's weird. In my native language I pronounce it like the english sequel, but in english I say es kyu el.

    Super cool

I think if you're using MS stack, sequel is more common, as SQL server is easy to say as "sequel server," where if your using postgresql or MySQL it'd make more sense to say the letters.

if I look at the names here, I get the feeling that devRant only has 50 users... I recognize a whole bunch here...

    Squirrel

@ShotgunSurgeon that's what makes it so cool, you can be someone here.
  • 3
@Root i have the same experience
  • 2
@jesustricks So you are kind of annonymous but at the same time well known... hmm...

@Alice On this page? nobody I presume. I mean many here are posting information about pretty personal stuff sometimes so if someone put in the effort I think it wouldn't be too hard to find out about someone's identity.
If I remember correctly you for example have been in the hospital about two or three months ago. Or was that @irene
  • 1
@irene you and @Alice are the names I see the most. Others are @ganjaman and @FrodoSwaggins as well as some more.

So I just assumed it was one of you two
  • 1
@Alice Than I hope you are doing well now
  • 1
@ShotgunSurgeon this is why i change my name whenever i can
  • 1
    The second one.

The former is not how 'S' is pronounced in english. And 'sequel' was a patented name for an aviation company by the time sql was introduced to the world.

Es-kju-el, I think its related to language groups, never heard slavic people calling it sequel
  • 1
I only say it in my native language, so I say each letter ( S-Q-L)
  • 2
Would be interesting to hear @norman70688 working on mysql db exports "mysexual dump"
  • 2
    S.Q.L
Sequal makes no sense since it's an abbreviation you are trying to pronounce.

It's like saying KEFKER for KFC
  • 2
@C0D4 The original paper (or at least the oldest one I found) called it SEQUEL though. structured english query language
  • 3
@ShotgunSurgeon and about 50 of them are jase's alts

    ess, queue, ell...
  • 1
    the latter
  • 1
In Brazil I have only heard as reading the letters (ésse-quê-éle in the local pronunciation). I have heard before that some people abroad used to say sequel, but I have never heard someone say it.
  • 1
    Depends..
    - Es-qu-ell
    - My Es-qu-ell

    But Sequel-server for MS. 🤷🏻‍♂️
  • 2
In my country, if you are trying to be posh, use sequel, if you are normal programmer we say es-kyu-el
  • 1
@writeascript yea but that was several decades ago.
Today, the only time I hear someone say sequal is C# guys who are older then me.
  • 0
SQL, since it is an abbreviation
  • 2
@C0D4 I thought KFC was KaFuck...
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In my experience, it's S - Q - L in the programming world, and sequel in the business world. Since I work with sysads and other business people, I pronounce it sequel mostly.
  • 1
I think jesustricks has it right, except he accidentally swapped the options.

Either you go with the option everyone uses (case in point: this thread) and say es-kyu-el or you try to be a smarty pants and/or want to sound super kewl by saying sequel.
  • 0
In my native langusge everybody is using S-Q-L. The only time i use "sequel" is when english speaking people look confused at me after saying S-Q-L.
  • 1
@myss true that, i'm also slavic but recently i keep on hearing young programmers pronounce it "sequel", so i question myself if i've been pronouncing it wrong whole time
  • 0
@dudeking I will pronounce it like this from now on!
