olback109816yLinux is free open software. Anyone is allowed to do whatever with it. Personally I think it will greatly improve WSL.
-
Voxera115856y@irene at least for companies, windows on workstations are easier, but if you are building software that should run under linux it either required a separate testing machine or virtual.
Also with integration like this you can easily run programs from both platforms side by side. -
I like it. Because others said Linux greatly helps a developer but I am not ready to permanently move away from Windows as I am still a student and I use it for a lot of other things as well
-
VaderNT16346y@kenogo that's true, and for WSL 2 they're going a new route with a complete Linux kernel. Pretty interesting stuff Microsoft is doing nowadays.
-
figoore1656y@irene as mentioned earlier, helping developers to test their code on other systems. And of course it is welcomed for docker containers too. Not to mention the linux libs which are not ported to windows but researchers might need... So yeah, i think it is a useful feature, but we will see if it will be released
(shit i forgot to mention that i use linux, and don't like microsoft, but it is still a welcomed feature) -
To clarify:
The translation layer has many (although mostly tiny) issues, which the Microsoft devs can not fix.
WSL2 will no longer use a translation layer. Instead a micro-hypervisor is used to run a highly customized LTS kernel (4.19.x?) which resolves all those issues.
As a side-effect IO will become alot faster!
Windows itself neither needs nor uses the Linux kernel. -
620hun83706y@irene as @Voxera said. I rely on Windows, but I prefer Linux for certain tasks. If there was a way to avoid dual-boot and VM I’d have Windows as a main OS and use Linux from within. I’m sure I’m not alone, so this is a clever move from Microsoft.
-
Exactly what @Yamakuzure said, as far as I know the Linux kernel was never meant to replace Windows kernel, but I have a feeling Windows is now going towards becoming the all in one system that will run software regardless of which OS it was written for ...
-
figoore1656y@620hun Exactly! I think there are plenty of developers share this attitude. Not to mention that there are a lot of domains where windows is the only accepted OS by the sysadmins, and this might make it more comfortable for linux heads :)
-
Voxera115856y@irene not really, it will be part of the normal windows but I expect many hobby devs targeting linux either run linux all the way or don’t bother with local test ;)
But who knows.
