Elyz78096y@kgbemployee I can, I'm just alone in my department so I doubt anyone else has the time or the inclination to take on my tasks on top of their own 🤔
-
@Elyz having a server that cannot be restartet seems like a desaster in the waiting..or in this case..it happened already
-
Elyz78096y@BurnoutDV I've been telling my boss that for months. We're working on fixing it but it's a large company and things don't move fast around here.
-
Maer17826yIf you are the only one who can fix it and you put up with fixing it, then you should renegotiate your pay.
-
Condor324966y@Elyz well, if the server can't be shut down and you don't know if it can cleanly reboot, I have bad news for you (well, rather your boss apparently)...
Always ensure that your server can still boot cleanly. Otherwise the cleaning lady that pulls a plug or a regional blackout or whatever are a disaster waiting to happen... -
Elyz78096y@Condor I have told him this several times and he is working on a solution. I'm a part-time underpaid student helper though so I'm not gonna lie, I don't really care at all outside office hours 😂 they were lucky it happened Thursday night as I work Fridays or shit would've been down until next time I came to work (or they found someone that could handle it. They don't have anyone else specifically hired to deal with shit like this besides me though)

Condor324966y@Elyz welp, sounds like horrible management there. Having a part-time student instead of a full-time sysadmin to keep the lights on on a server infrastructure (especially if it's a large one) just reeks of management wanting to cheap out on it 😅
I'd seriously use this as negotiation leverage for full-time employment and a raise. Hopefully management now realizes that that might be necessary. -
Elyz78096y@Frederick kind of but in a weird way. The other people were moved to different things as they were deemed "more important". No word on if they're ever coming back but they aren't doing sysadmin things anymore officially. I guess if it was really burning they could call one of them back for an emergency.
-
Elyz78096y@Frederick it's not a terribly difficult job so 😅 but yeah, definitely wasn't what I expected when I applied for the job
-
@Elyz wow this sounds exactly like the company I was working for till Feb. I was working in your exact same position - underpaid part time employee student who was the only one in the department. Do you happen to be in Paris by any chance? (Or Morocco or Tunisia) xD
-
Elyz78096y@exceptionalGuy nope, none of those places 😅 maybe it's just a general thing companies do to their student workers
-
@Elyz I think so. It's just horrible management. We had a sysadmin who doesn't know her shit and she didn't even know I wasn't working there for two months now. She texted me the other day asking me to help her with an error she was getting from an RPM build and I informed her that I don't work in the company anymore. Long story short, I had to do her the favour anyway. xD

I thought that you were going to say that someone had pulled the electrical cable out of the wall.

8 am, got in to work, everything has exploded overnight. The servers are dead, the scripts aren't running, everyone has panicked. So many emails.. So many Skype messages. I wish I wasn't the only one who can fix it. Send help (and coffee).
