The company I work for uses (environment)(OS)(number) but with hundreds of servers it has gotten confusing. prdwn15 or devlx8 was fine but now we have prdwin438 and so on...
There's been talk of moving to something more like environment-application-number instead. So Atlassian servers would be prod-jira-1, prod-jira-2, prod-confluence-1, prod-confluence-2, etc. -
-root5956yHere's how we do it in our company -
<Prefix for group of servers>- <data center identifier>-<some random identifier>
Note - prefix can be environment name, service name, etc -
endor57516yI name mine after Saturn's satellites, and when I'll run out I'll move to Jupiter's and other moons.
That's just for personal usage though 🤣
(I really wish to get some massive datacruncher one day, just so I can call it Sagittarius A* ) -
hitko31486yI used to go by colour shades, but nowadays I'm mostly shifting towards serverless & orchestrated deployments, so my servers are named <orchestration group>-<role>.
