Except for YouTube (and docs mybe), there are loads of alternatives.
Maps? I use OsmAnd.
Email? I use tutanota.com and my own mail server.
Analytics? Wrote my own more privacy friendly solution.
Youtube? Trying to do that through proxy sites.
Search engines? Duckduckgo and my own searx.me instance.
Drive? Own nextcloud installation.
Dns? Self written DNS server which has built in blocking functionality and proxies the good ones through to opendns.
It's really simple actually. -
@linuxxx Let's not forget this one:
Google chat services? I use Signal. No WhatsApp or Google/facebook/microsoft surveillance bullshit. -
@linuxxx and the youtube alternatives are existent they just dont work because of youtubes content. If youtube would be gone I think everyone would move to vimeo.
-
@Codex404 twitch.tv actually has a nice video system too
I wouldn't be surprised if they became the video superpower. -
If Google is banned somebody else will just deploy the same things again with the same revenue model. Because it works well for both the company and the users (at least in convenience).
-
ArnasL1986yThe biggest issue is YouTube I guess. There are existing alternatives from technology’s perspective, but not content.
-
@ArnasL whaha i dont know wickr but Telegram is almost as bad as whatsapp on the privacy area...
-
ArnasL1986yI mean there was a situation when Russian goverment tried to get in to one hacker’s telegram account. Telegram refused to give private key access to gov. Then Russia utter ultimatum: if they do not give private keys, they willshut down telegram service in whole Russia. In the end, Monday morning telegram worked as always without any disorders and services like google, facebook was down for 1-2 days. So it’s very intresting to hear linuxxx toughts.

@ArnasL Telegram not at all, luckily that's not just my opinion but a shared one of the best cryptographers/cyber security people in the world.
As for wickr, haven't looked into it much so hard to say for me :) -

There are a few big issues:
- It's advertised as a secure and end to end encrypted chat app. You'd expect an encrypted chat app to encrypt everything by default, right? With telegram, you have to manually enable the end to end encryption. People may think their chats are end to end encrypted while they're not by default.
- they developed their own cryptography. What's the first (unwritten) rule of developing a secure messaging app with encryption? Dont. Roll. Your. Own. Crypto.
Next to that, mtproto (telegrams encryption algo) has been developed by telegrams own people. Thats alright if they're cryptographers but they're mathematicians, that's a huge difference.
- the app doesn't save chats encrypted on device.
Enough arguments? :) -
ArnasL1986y@linuxxx Yea, now it seems to me like I was a blind ;D. I always used end-to-end encryption, but that fact about their own cryptography really rises trust issues. Goodbye telegram, welcome back wickr, also give a try on Signal!

voidpy5156yIf Google was banned from the Internet... ๐ฎ
One word: Freedom.
It should be a real thing. -
@Codex404 planing on committing suicide? lol company is at japan but we are based here in the Philippines
Let's say *poof* Google is banned from the internet and it's 10years later how would the internet look would it be existing services or do you think new ones would arrive.
