				That's called embedded programming. A lot of books on the subject.
 C is the default tool, plus you'll need a firm grasp on basics (usefull for every type of programming) and kernighan and ritchie is the greatest place to start.

				That is what computer engineers and electrical engineers do. So I guess that would be what you want to learn. Work your way down from low-level software to embedded to circuits and all the stuff electrical engineeris do.

				You need to go very basic: Start with an intro in Electronics,micro-electronics,Circuit Theory.Continue with VLSI,Computer Architecture,Signals and Systems and Digital Signal Processing...these are courses from my uni but you can find them everywhere with these titles...it's a long process and involves a lot of studying in order to make a useful hardware so good luck!
