Chill1246yJust look at price tag, that shoud calm you down ;). If not, just for fun calculate what it would cost you to go full apple :D
-
sauronjs2166y@Chill I don't think I'll buy anything apple(except that costly thunderbolt to hdmi converter). I got it from office few months ago when joined. This one is macbook air 2017 and price tag is justified if you ask me.
-
sauronjs2166y@Jilano yes, specs like this is usually around 50-60 k India (SSD models) and so is MacBook Air. And you don't get performance like tbis. My uptime was 72 days(yes I skip updates due to local screen sessions) until I crashed system with too many open files(system was not able spawn new processes). Now it's 49 days. And it's been only 4 months and few days here.
I was able to cross 60 days on Ubuntu at last office but I had to restart chrome and eclipse every now and then to keep it smooth and also limit the number of tabs I was using in chrome. Good thing was I able to update system without restarting for non-kernel packages. -
try to play some High end video game on it
or
broke some hardware part
or
try to run any bulky AI library
Thanks me later -
sauronjs2166yI have a desktop and and a laptop for personal usage, with Arch installed on them.
I have windows on my desktop for playing games(it has 4GB GTX 1050ti).
I use Mac only for office use and some times browsing.
My point is I don't need to waste time setting up my system every day. And that frustration when I system starts freezing when too much is running on system. I use screen with 50+ windows open at a time, each one them named specifically for which they were opened, with commands in their respective session history.
As I mentioned earlier I was able to cross 60+ day uptime but it was too much of pain to keep it smooth.
I am planning to upgrade my laptop with a 500GiB SSD and might enable zram and see if it works any magic. I just don't like restarting my system so often.
PS: Sorry but I had to mention the distribution. -
After watching Louis Rossman's streams I'm sure I will never buy a MacBook, at least with my own money.
-
While I'd never pay for a MacBook, holy crap it is satisfying to use. Been using one for a couple of months, and it's amazing. Everything is so sleek and good looking.
And the terminal.. Oh god the terminal 😍 never going back to windows if I can help it 😅
And before you say I should try Linux, I have. Used Ubuntu, arguably the most stable and user friendly distro, but for me it was just too much of a hassle as a personal pc. Still use it for all of my servers though. Always choose the best tool for the job -
there's nothing wrong with liking MacBooks. my old employer gave us all MacBooks and they were great. I miss it :(
there is however something wrong with BUYING a Mac. free? hell yeah! $1400? HELL NO! -
Boyzee905346yLast year got myself my first Mac, the Air, and actually was bit of afraid when my inner feelings started talking to me, and telling me "Hey, you knoooooow you like it!"

W77ng236yI purchased a Macbook Pro about 10 years ago for front end development, and will never go back. Never had an issue with it on the hardware or software side of things, it's solid. With that said, we use highly customized Lenovo's at work, nothing but problems. The majority of my family and some friends have gone through 2 or 3 PC's since I purchased mine, that speaks volumes to me. You get what you pay for.
I'm looking forward to a new Macbook Pro in the future! -
sauronjs2166y@W77ng I am not sure about Pros but Air looks fine to me.
I am currently using two chrome windos with around 20 tabs in each(without suspender), 3 VS Code windows (with many plugins enabled), 1 Android Studio, Postman and some apps (whatsapp, sequelpro, etc) and I still don't feel anything. New Air is costlier and better and I am not sure how much it's worth the money. -
sauronjs2166y@WIPocket Do you really believe that a dev should change to windows from a native unix eco?
I have to deal with windows crap in office on a daily basis when someone from my team can't do something in git-bash. I write bash scripts regularly and it's windows systems that are pain cause they can't use it
