I wonder why one would bother even looking at Apple for buying stuff 🤔 crappy hardware for outrageously high prices. I'd buy components for an ATX build with Linux over this any day 🙂

@Condor in my case: i do with ios, I like unix environments that don't leave me for dead because of the unsupported hardware and because these bitches run for years with little to legit no issue(my main is a 2013 macbook pro)

If you’re waiting for a comparable specs to cost ratio of Macs over other machines, than Apple may not be for you in general.

That’s a hard pill 💊 I had to swallow a long time ago. It sucks but I think anyone reading this will agree Apple is unlikely to ever lower their prices, and those invested in the ecosystem or interested in their products will have to accept paying what they’re charging.

@Condor Agreed, kind of. The pc I built 6 years ago is surprisingly still much faster than my 2-3 year old MacBook Pro that cost more.

That being said, the MacBook is a more delightful laptop and computer in general, and one unburdened by Microsoft pushing shit down your throat in Win10.

That’s one thing I don’t miss about using windows on the daily.

Dude... For that price, you can get a serious gamer PC and still have enough money left over to start a marijuana farm...

@Scipio @ilPinguino yeah i know apple costs way more than any standard build, but I love Mac os and am happy to 'pay' for the operating system and have it all done and dusted but fuck me at that price I would rather buy a PC and go through the headache of making it a hackintosh...

@Scipio same here, it's one of the reasons why I prefer Linux. But for hassle-free stock PC experience, I guess that MacOS ticks the boxes. I mean the OS does look really good..

@AleCx04 that's essentially why I'd do a custom build from components. No Nvidia but AMD, nicely supported CPU over the cutting edge like Epyc and so on (not sure if all its features are in mainline already, hence why). Stock builds can be a pain to run Linux on at times, like my beloved Acer Aspire ZC-700 which has a fucking Intel+Nvidia hybrid.. can't run any Linux system on that turd 😓

@kenogo yeah, I've heard similar reports from AMD hybrids users.. haven't had the chance to get my hands on one of those machines to see for myself though. But at least AMD's GPU drivers are open source, so bumblebee has something to work with 🤔
That said, not sure why you'd want integrated graphics for anything but power saving.. meh. A CPU isn't supposed to be doing double duty IMO 😕

@Condor brother I will refer to your battle tested knowledge for this later on. I severely want a custom built pc for a Linux machine. I have been running this beast on laptops since forever.

Intel has some NUX or something, check those. Put Linux or Mac on it tho' don't use Windows.

@AleCx04 You are right - the updates are to major versions can be tedious but the amount of money you save is not small.

@just-basic-user not just that. The whole hackintosh experience is broken and just not suitable for a professional environment.

I have 2 macs already. I don't mind paying when the product later on pays for itself.

@kenogo that was actually exactly the case. Over the years I have switched between both platforms quite a bit.

Currently, I am fairly happy with the Apple ecosystem, it works really well. That’s one thing I learnt whilst trying to switch to a windows / google / Apple hybrid setup.

But than again, I DO NOT want to shell out $2,000 for a new computer when it becomes time to replace, which may be soon.

So it’s either hardware that I am more comfortable paying for or a software ecosystem that integrates with itself really well.

Always this apple hate. For sure its expensive and you are paying for the logo, but with the logo comes Mac OS and IMHO it is a really great OS, which just wotks without any stress

But the price for the mini is just outrages, I can buy an actual macbook for that price which is portable, has a keyboard, display and everything

And yeah you are right but my MBP has lower specs and costs the same, the mac mini is more like a "cheap" working station for your home or office, so I think that the pricing is good when looking at overall apple pricing

My 6 year old laptop that I spend 800 bucks on has an i5, same ram and intel hd something. Apple pls.

@bittersweet I love the nuc design n was hoping to get one but read bad reviews of Linux on nuc. On the spec document, only supported os is Windows. Really sad state of affairs.

@ajit555 I love to hate Intel, but all NUCs I've tried so far work fine with Linux, some are even certified by Canonical as official Ubuntu hardware, like the NUC7i7DNHE — a pretty powerful Mac Mini alternative.

And Intel themselves has a HTPC guide which advises to use Linux Mint (a bit dated though, large pdf: https://intel.com/content/dam/...)

Good source is Canonical Certified Hardware, even if you don't plan on using Ubuntu — most of the hardware support depends on the kernel anyway.
