I used to work with this crap too and I'm still kinda traumatized from it.
I hope you get it fixed. -
@ilPinguino unbelievable this seems to be the de facto standard for a serious web shop...
-
@Intronout Yep. But then again, what other systems are there? I know someone who used to do SpreeShop, but that was pretty much the same.
Then there's OS and XT, but none of them has the flexibility of Magento (Sorry, that's the way it is).
I actually once got an "urgent" job offer after my first(and last) Magento gig. When I asked (informally, the person offering me the job was a good friend) why it was so urgent, the answer was "The other guy got a burnout and quit."
Well, I refused. I actually consider myself mentally stable and fairly stress-resistant, but... no, too much is too much.
I'd prefer S.E.A.R to Magento every day. -
fml892306yI like Magento a lot, but it can be done horribly and then it’s just a horrible expierence overall - Magento 2 brought many cool things into its core and is quite cool to work with
-
@fml89 I'll give it a try once I have recovered from the fact you need to fix things in its CORE files just to get the discount and tax calculations right...But yes, its the community edition.
-
fml892306y@Intronout what Version are you fixing stuff in the core? If you need to change a core file copy it over to app/code/local/PATH/FILE and do your stuff their. The varien Autoloader will check that folder out first and fallback to code/community and then to code/core.
For taxes, assuming you have rounding issues, check github and google for a bit. This has been done before - I work in Germany and taxes are notoriously hard to calculate here. -
@fml89 thank you, that sounds like great advice.
I'm working with 1.9.x
I was hoping there is a way of overriding the core without breaking update compatibility. 👍
It's not rt rounding issues but in general, it might be the reason because the customer wanted to save on the template so we went for one from template monster and I think they just 'fixed' things by hardcoding them in different places.
I'm from Germany as well, bzw and yes, were the masters of legislative regulations 😆 -
fml892306y@Intronout to verify if it’s your code or the craplate just turn the template to the base/default package in the settings. You’ll see what’s doing you wrong.
I have seen awful amounts of hacking in templates - I like the phtml template stuff in Magento - you can do good stuff with it. Unfortunately a lot of people out there call themselves magento pros and hack all their logic from view Loading to raw sql queries into their templates.
Look for Alan storm and Rico neitzel - they have made awesome guides and stuff for magento. Also check out firegento! -
@fml89 again, thank you! Sounds like great advice. Could I get in touch with you? We have covered most of our problems now but we're running into some other deadlines and I think we'd better be off with some paid support. Are you interested?

fml892306y@Intronout Hit me up on Twitter @trapsucks :) I’ll see what I can do (I speak German aswell if it helps)

Fuck you, magento and yes, fuck you, customer as well.
After 2 days of fixing crucial things like missing discount functionalities, taxes being displayed as 'tax' because some monkey hardcoded the term in the template instead of getting the tax class name and overall fumbling in magento's core just to make this broken shit do its job, the customer emails me, asking if we're making 'progress at all because the test link looks pretty unfinished'
Burn in hell, you two!
