When your business model goes against the principles of the app you bought, which gives first? It should be obvious.

@electrineer Source from a trustworthy german tech-newspaper, for english source just go ahead and google it (or DDG it) - a lot of tech-news are currently reporting about this - most of them just speculate though, a few provide source from facebook internals.

sick636yThey dont even have to losen up encryption in first place since they can read and analyze on both ends. Question is what has to be done online, theoretically all the Text analyze could be done offline. Not expecting anything like that, but since theres no source i don't believe this thread either

There's plenty more but this is enough.
Facebook has not said they wish to compromise end to end encryption. HOWEVER they may do pre encryption keyword analysis and send keywords back to homebase (hopefully using end to end encryption) which is less compromising but still bad. Enough for their CSO to leave over the matter. -

As far as I understood, they're already testing it in parts of India. -
Why are you people using Whatsapp anyways? It's literally the same algorithm as signal except Facebook owns it and wants to harvest your keywords.
Signal ftw. -
@deadPix3l because not using it would have a negative impact on my social life. I've got signal on my phone but I've never used it.
-
@electrineer just convince your friends to use the superior app.... Or just wait for ads to come and then everyone will switch.
-
@electrineer I lost quite a few friends when I quit it but for me personally, not using a mass surveillance integrated service was more important than loosing friends and if they'd really would be worth it, they'd fucking text me.
-
@linuxxx I think one of the problems social media has exacerbated is that most people confuse acquaintances with whom one has semi-frequent interaction and actual friends. If you can lose a "friend" over changing a communication app they probably aren't actually a friend.
-
@powerfulparadox but to put it the other way: If someone disappears from the communication app you use, they probably aren't actually a friend ;)
-
@electrineer my point equivalently. Social media has been conditioning us to call every person we interact with more than once and store contact information for a "friend." We forget that friend used to be much more meaningful.
-
@powerfulparadox Nah I also knew them irl and had a good connection but if they even refuse to use basic sms...
So... Facebook just stated that they plan on loosening up the End-to-end encryption in WhatsApp to analyze the messages and show user-specific advertisements.
Time to uninstall WhatsApp I guess!
