Been told ill be worming with Oracle DB'S today, as someone who's never touched on Oracle stuff before. Any advice?

Rejoice! Oracle is actually preforms pretty well, has alot of good system catalog views and a large support base. Like any rdbms it has its quirks but it's a decent product.

At what scope will you be interacting with this database? A user of existing tables, a dba creating tables, both, etc.?

Don't walk, run. Oracle sucks.

Learn as much as you can.
