I'm thinking about working overseas in Berlin next year. I'd like to try it for a year on a visa and see how I like it.
-
@starrynights89 Berlin is pretty awesome. The culture is great and the cost of living is cheap. There is a real need for good developers here.
-
@sleepyDevHead Then we'll see what happens when I graduate next year. I'll need to start looking into getting a work visa.
-
@starrynights89 Do it!! Move to Berlin!
So, for US citizens, if your degree is in CS and your University is on an approved list recognized by Germany, then all you need in addition is a contract with a salary higher than $54k euros to get the EU Blue visa, which let's you work and also travel out of Germany/EU for up to 12 months.
So, technically, you can work in Germany for a year, leave, come back within a year and qualify for permanent residency in the EU within 22 months if you choose to have some German language proficiency.
In other words, Berlin really wants tech people from the US. -
@sleepyDevHead It sounds promising. Do companies help people from the US get visas or is it generally expected you have one upfront?

@starrynights89 Good companies will offer this with a job offer and do the paperwork for you.

I just accepted an offer as a backend dev for a startup in Berlin, Germany. I’m looking forward to all the coffee and beer I will drink while I work. 😆
