GIF vs JIF is for noobs.

Say, fellow ranters, is it Regex or Rejex?

@oudalally now that I think about it, Rejex sounds like a distant relative to AJAX.

    Rejex sounds so wrong
  • 5
    Rejex.

It's kinda like how the "ge" at the end or "orange" makes a "juh" sound.

    Rejex.

I never heard anyone say rejular. So RegEx it us.

Oh and btw no one ever dared to utter the word jraphics in my present as well!
  • 2
The reason some people prefer Regex that the hard 'g' comes from the word 'regular'.

Others choose to treat the acronym as a separate word, regardless of the context it came from.

Gif and Regex. The f is jif and rejex..?

@olback the best resolution to this conundrum is, that only one pronunciation needs an alternate spelling to be communicated in writing. The correct one is spelled as it is spoken.
  • 3
    @RantSomeWhere @Sefie

You also don't here people say cag-e, orang-e, hing-e, and so on (as in pronouncing the g and then just slapping an e on the end of it).

The "ge" combination often produces a "j" like sound, such as in the previously mentioned words.

But this isn't a linguistics class, so I don't care enough to debate it. Just showing where I come from with rejex lol

Ive theard the designer of regex want it to be called rejex.

@Stuxnet Why would we pronounce it "orang-e"? The word is "orange". The "Reg" in RegEx comes from "regular", which is why it's pronounced Reg-Ex.

    Found this on stackexchange

@telephantasm please refer to the last sentence of my comment. Thanks.

G can sound like j, does not mean it is written with a j.
  • 2
@xaos if I ever get dogs I will call them Rejex and Jif just to trivger fellow devs when Im calling for them xD

@Stuxnet just saying "I dun care", doesn't make it not dumb :/

Reg, similar to VEGetable, ex simply pronounced "x"

    Regex

I like to pronounce it as regex. Also pronounced as mindfuck.

This is so weird, I just always assumed everyone pronounced it rejex

The English alphabet needs downsizing. The letter C needs to go, there is no point to it’s employment. Root for the Seltics and dance to Keltic music. The letter C was most certainly given a job per a political Kommittee decision.

The letter Y needs to go. There is E and I, they need the work.

G needs to stop cross dressing as a slutty little J, plain and simple.

Then we would have GIF vs JIF and regex vs rejex solved. ;-)

TL;DR: Hard G in both cases based on the abbreviated word in both cases.
  • 2
@xcodesucks you mean " dans", "Seltiks", "musik", etc? 😂

Rejex sounds cool and all, but it is not Rejular Expression, it's Regular Expression.

    So Regex for the win

    @telephantasm Caught me, yep!

@YuganshT79 dude, stop. It SO doesn't sound cool, it sounds stupid...

    Both 😅

@Codex404 mental vocalizing sounds like “rejects” when I see the J there.

Regex and gif, both for the same reason: rejular and jraphics.

Also, according to English pronunciation rules, it should be a hard "g" there, just like "ghoti" is pronounced like "ghoti," not "fish." (That stupid facebook trash post)

@xcodesucks "The English language needs downsizing. The letter C needs to go, there is no point to it's [sic] employment. [...] The letter Y, [E, I, and G] need to go."

    Let me respond with:

A Plan for the Improvement of Spelling in the English Language
    — By Mark Twain*

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter “c” would be dropped to be replased either by “k” or “s”, and likewise “x” would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which “c” would be retained would be the “ch” formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform “w” spelling, so that “which” and “one” would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish “y” replasing it with “i” and iear 4 might fiks the “g/j” anomali wonse and for all.

Generally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeiniing voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez “c”, “y”, and “x” — bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez — tu riplais “ch”, “sh”, and “th” rispektivili.

Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.

    @Root this is gold!

@Root perhaps we failed to simplify and clarify the alphabet and language whereas the Russians were successful. Russian (Bolshevik) Revolution of 1917 was both political and grammatical. At the time they also restructured the language and the government.

Imagine having every letter have exactly one sound. The brilliance was the addition of the modifier letter “b” which softened the preceding letter. An “option key” for a language.

I wish Swift were that change for computer science languages. Unfortunately I’m not seeing simplification.

And here I am wondering why everybody from nonegnlish speaking world is trying with english pronounciations.. 🤔 Why not pronounce it like in your native language?! Do you all really have so many international clients that it matters how you pronounce it??

And for english speaking world there will always be variations in pronounciations between brits & americans.. so why even bother?! Both correct & you should be able to understand both versions..

@Root OMG last paragraph made me want to infinite loop -- your comment!! O.o I know my english isn't perfect but fuuuuu... That is messed up! // I know you don't usually write like this but still.. big cringe!!
@xcodesucks as for russians, they should write their dots on es and mark the letter that has accent.. Without that at least we/non natives are fucked when pronouncing stuff o.o

@sladuled haha. It just points out why dropping letters is a bad idea 😋. Kind of pedantic, but I find it amusing
