That's because the most skilled program as a hobby and are self taught. Colleges teach theory but alot of theory does not work in the wild

I've found that it doesn't make much of a difference. People that went to university for such things, may in some cases not poses talent. However, people that are self taught can sometimes be over-specialized.
The best programers I've met had these qualities:
- Hard working
- Constantly learning
- Passionate -

Formally-educated people may lack that desire just as much as self-taught people may have it. -
Dunning-Kruger at work. Incompetent idiots don't even know that they are dumb. Their ignorance gives them self-confidence - unwarranted, but honest. And that's what cuts in interviews.
Because we humans are still primarily apes without much fur.
