Co-worker: hey, can you create an email?

Me: yeah, who needs one? There are no records indicating any new people starting for another two weeks.

Cw: if for Stan, he started today. Also he needs a computer set up.

Me: who the hell is Stan and why are there no records of this person?

Cw: he's new, he started today so we didn't need an email or computer before today.

Me: I get that they're new, but what happened to giving the IT department at least 3 days notice on new hires so I can make sure things get taken care of?

Cw: you know how it is around here, nobody gets notice for anything. So can you get that email and computer setup for me, he can't work without them.

Me: I get that we don't actually plan for anything around here and that 90% of my job is fixing that failure, but hiring someone isn't like a system failing, people don't just show up and say "I start today" they have to go through interviews and background checks and other stuff, someone besides this person knew they started today so I don't think it's too much to ask that I get an email when the offer is extended to the person so I can prepare a system.

Cw: well we interviewed him two weeks ago and he accepted the offer last week, he's here and waiting so just as soon as you can please.

Me: well here's an email, the computer is gonna have to wait, I have a lot going on today and I don't have any computers ready right now.

*Seriously tempted to make them wait till next week to cover the 3 days notice I've asked for 100 times*

    Stan is happy to wait

    @ViRaS not if Stan isn't getting paid.

    I often wonder if people forget to alert payroll to new hires as often as they forget to alert IT.

    @theKarlisK I know it's not Stan's fault which is why I will end up doing it, likely by tomorrow, but out of the 10 people involved in the interview/hiring process I only need an email from one of them.

    The real issue is that there are still no defined processes for anything outside of what I've written and that really only covers how to deal with things that affect me directly. Like setting up new equipment.

    The first response to co worker should’ve been “idk can I?”

    But in all seriousness, when I had my first internship, the IT guys took 2 days to get my laptop... after reading your story, I know IT guys aren’t to blame now.

    @sylar182 Right 😂

    @YeahOkay I'd love to automate some of these things, unfortunately I'm a single person managing web development for 200+ clients, and IT for 100+ employees with 2 offices in different cities so if I ever get a couple hours where I'm not actively putting out a fire, or working on something with a ridiculous timeline, I'll be right on top of that.

    My biggest issue here was that it takes 12 people involved in the hiring process and the guy in charge of making sure people CAN work doesn't find out about new hires until the day they start.

    @YeahOkay believe me, if I had the time to automate things that would have been done 3 years ago when I started. But when I started they were a startup in "expand mode" so we grew explosively fast and before solidifying business processes. I suggested back then that we hold off for a couple months so I could set up some infrastructure and processes but expanding and making more money seemed like a better decision to those in charge.

    @YeahOkay if you want to come clean up the shitstorm they created before I started and haven't had the time to clean up myself, then by all means my door is open, but since the company doesn't feel we need any additional IT help because "we're managing fine right now" you won't be paid for it.

    This was a rant about a sigular instance of something that I thought I had finally gotten fixed months ago, giving me notice of new hires so I'm not spending office hours configuring workstations.

    @YeahOkay you're right I can't blame "the guy before me" for all the issues around the office because there wasn't anyone before me to handle this shit.

    But I can blame lack of planning and failure to follow process for this particular issue.

    @YeahOkay

    Well, I dont know why you are being such a bossy type, but you seems to be that co-worker.

    How long have you worked? I bet you got more assistance than OP does.

    Myself I am alone in a company of 75 people, how should I have to time automate stuff when I have all kind of shit to fix all the time?

    @sylar182

    Well, just checked that thots profile, and guess what:

    "Troll as a Service"

    So he just wanted to be a dick :)

    @Stallman thanks, I appreciate it, I could tell he's more management type than actual dev.

    @sylar182

    Yeah, or he probably has not worked with it at all. Kids tends to have that attitude.
  • 2
    @YeahOkay you sound just like my boss.

    "This should be like *this*"

    Well boss, there are technical limitations and reasons it doesn't already do that like–

    "I don't care about your excuses just make it happen!"

    @YeahOkay you're obviously really good at reading.

    I never said I don't get to build anything worthwhile, I never said the job sucked, I never said it was a customer, and while he may be clueless about *how* things work, he does have plenty of decent ideas about the way things *should* work and I spend a good deal of my time making those dreams a reality for him. Plus the perks are pretty great.

    So why don't you take your holier than thou attitude and go play with your friends, wait, you don't have any of those do you?

    And by the looks of it, no one here agrees with you, none of your opinions got any +'s and one of them even got a minus from someone that wasn't me.

    @YeahOkay What's with the toxic attitude? Chill. Take some blue pills.

    @YeahOkay well since you only have one summarized interaction to go off of you can't really form an educated opinion on what my daily work life is like.

    But I'm super happy for you that nothing ever goes wrong for you and everyone always does their job properly and no one ever asks you to do their job for them.

    @sylar182

    Dont care about that kid, you can't cure stupid :/
  • 1
    @YeahOkay I appreciate your apology, and respect your right to disagree with my rant.

    Do I think I needed to get this mad about this? No, but the combination of a dozen different things (and a few repeated) within a 24-hour period can start to get under someone's skin especially when they're dealing with other stuff in their personal life as well.

    @YeahOkay

    Being an asshole is stupid. Therefore = you are stupid.

    @sylar182 Employer is obliged to pay employee at the date of the contract start. I guess that this loss in monetary resources to an employer that can't do their work, i.e. "technically unemployed" is a good lesson for employer to start caring about organization?

    @Stallman He's been a dick on my recent rant too. Indeed, troll as a service.

    @YeahOkay don't call me in vain
