I used to have my WinXP box ran on 128MB of RAMBUS. -
No, watching 45 GB Movie on second monitor while having chrome open... Compare that to fresh installed 3,5 GB Ram sucking Windows 7!

Free memory is a bit pointless (why have it if its not being used?) so linux (and possibly other OS's, I dont know?) will use it as a disk buffer cache until its needed elsewhere...
So even if your system isn't running many user processes, it memory can still appear to be used up because its been buffering disk blocks for months.
I think thats how it works anyway! -
