If only compiling a medium to big C/C++ library wasn't a fucking nightmare still in 2016, with all those slightly incompatible build tools that fail miserably on your machine...

Well, depends, if you are lucky and upstream uses autotools or cmake then it is mostly easy. Only problem is if they think they are clever and invent their own buildsystem. And unfortunately there is plenty stupid people who think they are clever and smarter then everybody else.
