It's up to individuals to get in to a field. I don't think it's really a gender issue as much as women are generally more creative where men are more likely to be logical. I'm not saying women can't be logical, but most are more the creative type.
I'm sure women know the field exists, if they're not interested, why ram it down their throats? -
ToshNeox2528y@ingenioushax Yeah, and if we make it really easy for women to get into the field (e.g. grants), then men don't get as much chance and it becomes unfair. It would be better to just make it completely even and let everyone decide for themselves where they want to go, I reckon
-
aceface3398y@ingenioushax The problem is more fundamental than that. Why are women more "creative" and men more "logical"? Because of how they are raised and the impressions people leave on them. I know an 8th grade girl whos math teacher said that girls a fundamentally worse at math which made her believe she couldnt do engineering. That got me so mad. And her response was "Well my teacher said it, so it must be right"

We still live in a male dominated society, it's the attitude of men towards women that needs to change, equality is still a long way away. The great change is very much hindered by religion and cultural aspects whose attitude towards women actively promote discrimination. Refreshingly the Tech industry has led the way in the attitude shift restoring (or working towards) the balance of opportunity and career progression for women. This attitude shift needs to filter through all walks of life and generations and ultimately parents need to be involved in the process. Once this is achieved then we can say that women are treated equally, I fear this is still in the distant future and will possibly never happen. I passionately believe that if this attitude never existed the world would be in a much better place than it is now.

@helloworld While I like your username, I have to disagree. we are pretty much at am equal society, and are not, as you said, very far away. Men and women are different naturally, and we should not go out of our way to change this. You do not see people going far out of their way to encourage men to join women dominated fields such as nursing, while you are saying that we should go out of our way to encourage women to join the tech industry. While I do agree that women sometimes feel discouraged because of the ratio of genders in this field, there are already alot of things to help counteract this. Many schools have special programs just for women, and oftentimes do not have the same equivalent for men. I know of some that are for everyone that is not a white male. At that point, I feel as if they are being racist towards that person by not including them in these programs. Instead, we should encourage everyone to join as the tech industry is in need of all types of people.

iRobot13678yCalm your balls people 😜 All we want is more female dev to be in devRant to impress them with our rants ; #no_offence 😊 #pun

aceface3398y@ingenioushax There are many things wrong with the article you explicitly searched for on the internet to defend your stance. Where's the paper on the findings? Was it a random sampling? Where's the statistical analysis? Was it published in a scientific journal?

We (existing dev communities) can do our part by being encouraging and welcoming. Any time I see mention of Coder Dojo in Ireland half of the participants are girls, not to mention the Young Scientist winners of the past few years.
It's already happening 👍🏻 -
rant1518y@pixeltherapy Well it's not happening around the world, I can tell you that.
Women are viewed as better suited for foreign languages, customer relations, general people skills. Regardless of background and expertise a lot of times an employer will pick a male for a dev role rather than a female.
Same is true in the maths field. -
@aceface: First, there was no searching. It's the second article on Google under the search terms, " are men more logical than women". I also read the first, which is from http://scientificamerican.com/artic.... Secondly, science is science.
The second article just breaks down the findings in a more readable way. Why don't YOU do a search first before attempting to start a flame war. 😇 -
aceface3398y@ingenioushax
Let me read that article for you:
"Another lingering question is whether the structural differences result in differences in brain function, or whether differences in function result in structural changes."
Your argument is that science proves its nature over nurture. This article does not support either conclusion.
