    I can't be bothered to look, but I'm pretty sure that there was already a compression tool called XIP.

    Isn't .xip old? Like 1991, MS-DOS 3.3 on a HP 95LX palmtop old?

    @Tippy i think you're thinking of the "Execute in place" xip. The file extension .xip is like a .zip, but 'better' and can be digitally signed. Appears to have been introduced in OS X 10.9.
