Due to inspiration of giving up with windows being slow (performance wise) always connecting to MS severs (I have slow internet) so it’s noticeable when I can download quicker on a raspberry pi then on a laptop - both over wifi 🤷‍♂️

And burning a fucking boot DVD for Ubuntu takes 3 fucking DVDs at 2.4x speed - before getting a successful boot disk 😞

I think it’s time to swap out this hdd and go to the dark side!

This has been a painful journey but fuck I made it.

Couldn’t enter bios
Needed to pull bios battery 😰
Finally put laptop back together

Pulled wifi card, hdd and DVD drive
Yay bios 🤷‍♂️
Swapped boot order to DVD drive
Put drives and wifi card back in
Got stuck at Ubuntu splash screen
Had to change to compatibility mode
Reboot again
Install...........
Yay it installed,
Updated everything
Rebooted
Got stuck at TTY
fuck me dead
Install lightdm from tty
Reboot
Holy fuck I made it

Now I know why people don’t bother with this 😂

Spoke too soon
Can’t log the fuck in now, screen just refreshes back to login 🤷‍♂️
That windows HDD is starting to look nice right now

I’ll give mint ago, I use that in VM anyway, but would have thought Ubuntu the easiest to get going.

@C0D4 I can say that those issues are rare. Having installed at least 10-20 ubuntu systems (different hardware), I had this with one very old laptop but the hardware simply wasn't compatible so yeah, what do you do then haha.

It's usually a very smooth experience!

@linuxxx this laptop has a few years on it but has been pretty good overall.

I’m going to try again with mintOs tomorrow and see how it goes, for now I’ve shoved my windows HDD back in for the meantime.

@C0D4 I'd also recommend Kubuntu or KDE Neon. Been using it for while now and the fucker runs flawless and is very beautiful! (KDE Neon)

@kaloxy how, oh please tell me HOW, another distro, that is based on the same distro but has older stuff in it, that just changes the UI basically, going to fix his laptop just being old and buggy?

It's the same programs, in multiple distros!

Instead, try to open a TTY session Ctrl+Alt+F2, log in, and see journalctl -xe.

If your TTY session gets reset each few seconds than it's a GPU bug and X is constantly restarting. Boot into recovery mode and try journalctl -xe again. Look for errors, search about them, find the problem, attempt to fix it.

@AndSoWeCode yea thinking it’s a bug somehow, I can login even in tty but it brings me back to the login prompt before I can do anything 😞.

I have ran Ubuntu on this machine in the past (~12) I think it was, without issues.

I’ll give another distro a chance and see how it goes.
As for the wifi issue that was just my laptop being a bitch and trying to do a network boot instead of accepting the F2 key for bios.

@C0D4 I had this issue before. For me it was faulty, or badly installed nvidia drivers on a laptop with both Intel GPU and nVidia high performance GPU. As it was just a test install to play with a distro, I didn't bother fixing it, and just reinstalled, without installing the nvidia drivers.

But other times I was troubleshooting boot problems, recovery mode was quite useful. You can also try to boot in live CD or Live USB and try to chroot and then see if you can view the journal.
