Was at my sisters place a little ago and somehow we came at the subject of her laptop.
For everyone who thinks I'm posting this solely to hate on windows, I'm not. This really happened and if you don't believe it, well, so be it, I guess.
Also keep in mind that's she's using a stock version without anything except for word and itunes installed.

She got it a couple of years ago and I dual booted it for her (windows + ubuntu). I fully expected her to use windows because of office and outlook etc.

Asked her anyways:

Me: So, you've got dual boot, although I think already know the answer, what system do you use mostly? (I didn't even consider that there was a possibility that the answer would be ubuntu or linux)
Sister: Ubuntu!
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me:
Me: 😵
Me: Sorry, what? You're not using windows as primary system?!
Sister: No. It at first takes that motherfucking system about 5 minutes to reach the FUCKING LOGIN SCREEN.
Me: Ow, that's bad :/
Me: *turns laptop on and indeed, it takes a fuckton of time*
Me: Is the password still the same as when I set it up for you?
Sister: Yesss.
Me: *types the password, it's working, loading screen appears*
Sister: Would you like a coffee?
Me: Uhm.... sure? But that would take you about 10-15 minutes to make.......?
Sister: Yes. And that's exactly how long it takes before that fucking piece of shit called windows has finally loaded the FUCKING DESKTOP.
Me: 😅
Me: Okay but it can't be that bad, right? I mean, I hate windows but you mostly need it for studies and such and as you know I'm not judging you for tha......
Sister: YES IT IS THAT FUCKING BAD. WHEN I'M IN CLASS, IT TAKES HALF THE FUCKING CLASS TO LOAD BEFORE I CAN OPEN WORD OR WHAT-THE-FUCK EVER.
THAT'S WHY I USE UBUNTU PRIMARILY, BECAUSE, ALTOUGH IT'S NOT MY FAVOURITE SYSTEM, IT. JUST. FUCKING. WORKS.

Well, I did definitely NOT see that one coming!

There is some bloatware on there but definitely as bad as what would cause this. Virus scan turned up empty. No. Fucking. Clue.
It's not a gaming laptop or anything but come on, it should run either windows or linux very well.

its just windows it needs long to boot, the later versions just dont shut down properly, that is why they boot so fast
  • 13
It’s has less then 4GB ram and a tiny processor?
Windows is slow... sure but this slow 😱

Ah well, if ubuntu works, it works 😎
  • 5
    Did you check power options?
By default windows set it to balanced and that's when shit start, try the other one guess it was called Performance, that should help.

Dad is running Windows 7 on a 4GB RAM and not a single issue, does lag sometimes but that rarely happen
  • 4
@gitpush No I didn't. I'm also not planning to as a system should be able to function without this kinda bullshit by default, as ubuntu is doing ;-)
  • 5
@Alice Nah haha, she is not on devRant too badly :/
  • 2
@linuxxx I understand your point but as the fact that this is not the default behavior and yes windows sucks I too can't bare using it these days, but that doesn't mean you don't go through the possible solutions
  • 2
@gitpush I made it very clear to her and my parents (who both are full-linux) that I'm not supporting anything with windows. That's why I installed Ubuntu for my sisster/dad's laptop and my parents run Elementary OS on the home-pc :-)
  • 2
@gitpush I did look through some online resources and most of them recommended to take a look at high CPU usage from windows processes themselves but the system is hardly taking any resources so idk, can't find much else :/
  • 2
@linuxxx then one damn solution, in Ubunut: rm -rvf WindowsParition

By the way doesn't open office or alternatives cover her needs? Or there are windows only softwares that she uses?

Cuz it is a huge pain having windows just for that purpose

    Title-"linux converter", Unlocked.
  • 2
@gitpush She went for google docs for now. it at least works for her and although I disagree with her obviously, that's her decision.
  • 2
@linuxxx I'm getting a feeling you are in deep pain cuz of that 😓🤔😂
  • 1
Uhm..... I've never seen windows this show unless the HD failed.... You must've installed it wrong or crippled it somehow?
  • 1
@Condor maybe psychopathic ex-girlfriend would be a closer match.
  • 1
@billgates I didn't install it (I'd rather cut my dick off), it came pre-installed and was working very well at THAT moment.

And I do actually get @Alice's point. As long as we keep in mind that both men and women are able to do horrible things/abuse to one another in a relationship, we're all good if you ask me.
  • 1
@Condor I've got to say that abusive and needy are two very different things.

A very good friend of mine had an abusive (and needy as well but lets leave that one out) girlfriend for a few months and he's still dealing with legal bullshit (law enforcement and intelligence agencies, no fucking kidding) till today.

But on this note of windows being slow... 2.4GHz Quad Core + 8GB Ram doesn’t seem to keep up with Windows anymore.

I think I’ve finally given up fighting windows... *downloads ubuntu* time for a fresh start I think 😅

@linuxxx oh maybe self installing updates then... Don't boot for a long time/after first install == installing a lot (100+) of updates everytime you boot?
  • 0
@Alice By the way, as for my latest comment towards you , no offense meant in any way but I know quite some girls who are convinced (and always push it that way in convo's) that only guys can do bad things in relationships. This has made that I always throw the comment I threw at you into convo's, to make it clear that both sides can do equally bad things.
  • 1
@billgates She was an every day user (including updates, I tell her to do those for security) so that one has been ruled out already :/
  • 2
@Alice Yeah that indeed. He took her in after she ran away from home to make sure she didn't have to go to the police or sleep on the street and when the police discovered she was at his place, she came up with a fucking being-held-against-her-will charge.

But then, she'd spread her legs for a fucking pack of cigs.

I guess using Windows has become an absolute 'pane' for everyone now.
  • 1
@Bagul Not sure what you mean with pane but it's been a pain for me since I was 15 (which was when I moved to Linux).

    I'm 23 now, go figure.
  • 0
I feel like you've told this story.
  • 1
    @c3ypt1c What do you mean?
  • 0
@linuxxx Sorry, I was trying to make a pun on pain and pane because it's Windows... and windows have windowpanes.

Real talk, though, I wish I ditched windows at 13 too. But that all said, I bought my friend's old laptop yesterday and installed Manjaro to use it for work and I feel like its the best investment I've made this entire year so far.
  • 0
    @Bagul I was 15 but yeah, gotya!
  • 1
@Alice @c3ypt1c If you mean this story from me, I've written it out before but never posted it.
  • 2
@linuxxx 15, yeah, my bad. Not wearing my glasses and about to doze off.
  • 1
@Bagul It's 2 am here, good idea haba
  • 2
Install WPS community edition for her. Can open and edit .docx .xlsx .pptx

I like it more than libre :3

Google doc has limited functions and need internet. If she loves cloud, and don't mind google, introduce her to skydrive/OneDrive (whatever Microsoft is calling it's cloud storage). It has online word editor as well.

I've got Windows 10 on 8GB RAM/i5 proc and it takes literally 10-15 secs to load, your sister must have had Windows 7 or older, because since 8 the startup time was considerably reduced (from minutes to seconds)
  • 0
@AVGVSTVS I experienced the same problem, but for me Ubuntu is slow to boot too (maybe because Gnome sh- it). 4gb ram, i5 2-2,7ghz
  • 0
    I feel you bro
  • 0
You know that you need to reinstall every once in a while. Also, if she doesn't have an SSD defrag the system also check for HDD errors
  • 1
    "IT. JUST. FUCKING. WORKS." 😂😂
  • 0
@linuxxx @Alice im pretty sure it was this rant that my brain has kinda compressed and thought was similar.

    https://devrant.com/rants/1435049/...

I mean, to remember a rant for two weeks is something.
  • 1
@c3ypt1c Ahh could be yes. I'm not woops and my sister is 20 years old so deffo a different one :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx yes. Definitely 😂
  • 0
@DjSall Why would I need to reinstall it once in a while?! I'm definitely not up for doing that as it should just work (ubuntu runs stable as fuck on that system for like 4 years now without a single reinstall)

As for the defrag, good one. But hdd errors seem strange to me as ubuntu runs well.

Something is definitely wrong somewhere 😂

My Windows 10 PC boots up in about 15 seconds for login screen and another 15 after I've logged in.
  • 0
@aaxa windows 10 doesnt boot from an shutdown, it recovets from hibernating. we need to compare reboot time with windows 10
  • 0
@linuxxx because windows just fucks itself in it's knees if you let it for long enough. I reinstall every PC every two years, and it works. It may not be required but it is fine.
  • 0
@stop Doesn't boot from a shutdown? What do you mean? I certainly expect my PC to fucking shut down when I click on "Shut Down" in Windows.
  • 0
@aaxa It kinda doesn't shut everything down and instead saves the session in memory and boots that to save booting time or something.
  • 0
I have got a laptop from 2013 with win10. It is my only laptop. Everything I work with is on there(and on usb-sticks/cloud etc.).
The boot takes about 15 sec.
And I have got about 20gbytes of programmes on there. Just programms.
  • 0
@Bagul @Alice That fucking answers why my keyboards lightning doesn't always shut off when I shutdown my PC. Are you fucking kidding me?

Can I turn this off by any chance?
  • 0
@aaxa its called hibernating in the Linux World.
  • 0
@stop I know, and that's what I would expect from the sleep function in Windows. Apparently, Microsoft doesn't know what Shut Down means
  • 0
@aaxa its the only way to make windows boots fast
  • 0
I'm sorry, but who takes 15 minutes to make a coffee? Is it filter? 😂😂
