New devRant feature! Filtering by post type! This took a bit longer to get out than we had planned, but now that extra click to label a post type will be put to good use! Hate memes but love rants? Want to only see questions? Don't want to see random off-topic posts? Filter away!

We're pushing to Android now, iOS shortly, and web will be coming soon.

    Finally! Thank you!

    Wooow! That's awesome!!!

    @dfox hard at work!

I started using this just recently (probably just when it was released). I didn't know it was new. Just thought I've overlooked this for the longest time.

    Is the Undefined category intentional?
  • 6
(also, ho do I apply this in the API?)
  • 12
@AlgoRythm "undefined" are older rants without types (before mid-sept) or from a platform that doesn't support rant types.

I've been going through Top/All which are mostly older and categorizing them best I can so those older gems don't get stuck in "undefined"

Last question: you aren't afraid this will separate the community too much? Getting attention on posts is already hard, now many people aren't even going to SEE lots of rants.

Niceee. Just what we need. 🕺
  • 5
Also editing a rant will double tag it (see most recent rant)

    Nice and congrats!

@AlgoRythm if people don't want to see certain types of rants, no reason to force it on them. The algo already does this, showing people more of what they like and less of what they don't like. What we anticipate this will do is help give more attention to quality posts that would never get the volume of upvotes compared to more popular types like rants and joke/memes (e.g. questions).

Most importantly we wanted a solution to the problem of people complaining about jokes & memes. Now they can just hide them entirely. Jokes & memes will still get plenty of attention, more positive attention even because it will just be people who want to see those types rather than people who are going to downvote or add negative comments.

@AlgoRythm thanks, that issue should be fixed for future edits now.

For the API, just pass “filters” to the /rants endpoint which is a comma delimited list of type ids to filter by.

    Cool !

Finally, thank you. Bye bye to every meme!
  • 3
@Alice Downvoted about 5 posts already now. All memes while I set the filter NOT to see memes!
  • 6
@linuxxx the labels are self reported, so likely going to be some mislabelled ones. We talked about auto pushing rants into "undefined" if they get too many downvotes that suggest mislabelling is happening
  • 2
@trogus Yeah, sorry for earlier, just got annoyed as hell there for a second haha.
    Last part, awesome!
  • 2
@dfox @trogus good job guys, but I noticed many rants have both "rant" and "undefined" as their tags, what happened there?
  • 3
@JoshBent do you have an example? It could be just the rant was originally tagged with “rant” so it would still show up in the tags even though the actual type is undefined.
  • 1
@dfox search for "rant" in the search, theres multiple examples to get an idea if that was the case, maybe it should get categorized as rant if its there already?
  • 12
@dfox another thought also: add an option to the downvote function "wrong category", based on that you could filter it to undefined or better have a seperate category "wrong category", to filter the undefined more

for the far future having a "what would you categorize this instead?" which then based on most votes can then categorize it correctly, would make it a fully automated and more stable category system too

Hmm... My meme rant not getting enough ++, better post it as a rant and not as a joke 🤔

I'm afraid what's mentioned above will happen :/

    Woo-hoo thanks for this @trogus

Can we have smiling and sad face for avatars if that's small thing and OK to implement?
  • 0
So better post any original good jokes to rants instead of jokes/memes. Also, is rant==story?

    Whop whop

@filthyranter soon also on Windows 10
  • 2
    this solves so many problems
  • 1
    This is a good idea,

I didn't read all the comments, so forgive me if someone already mentioned it.

But it would be cool if you could let users also vote on what the content might be in case we have people that are not categorizing their content correctly
  • 2
Another thing to consider is the usage of !rant in post body text or as tag. Think you can check for it and don't give "rant" tag for those rants. Maybe they should be under random or undefined.

Just an idea to discuss. If acceptable, I'll create an issue.

    @dfox @trogus

@electrineer most rants end up as stories, so when posting, we have it labeled as "rant/story", should probably have the same label for the filter
  • 1
I like it all, so I might not use this as much as some people might who only like the rants. Still, a good idea and great work.

Thanks team devRant for this valuable new feature!
