Off topic. When will apple make a 15 inches macbook pro with NO touch bar? I don't like touch bar 😢
-
1. The idea behind making their own processor is to make the iPad and Mac apps seamless
2. Also, security concerns in the light of recent exploits
3. Either the processor will come out great or will be forgotten like Apple maps. -
@Floydian and after a while only apple engineers will be able to buy very high priced apple products .
-
Brolls31557y@rookiemaverick I actually use Apple maps, it’s a’ight these days.
I’d rather not trust my navigation data to Google. -
Brolls31557yI think it’s an inevitable step in their dominance over their own supply chain.
It allows them greater control security wise, it’s a huge win for optimisation as well as further blurring of the lines between iOS and OS X.
I mean, they’re even looking at manufacturing their own microled displays, so it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if this is something they choose to do.
Supply chain issues are a bummer for any company, let alone one where demand peaks in the millions monthly, this just makes complete sense for a company like Apple. -
Can they just like, make a laptop with a real keyboard please? And higher specs? Like for real pros?
-
sha-bang3497y@rookiemaverick @Floydian @Brolls what do you think about their claim to start by 2020? I think it's crazy considering that ARM processors are MAYBE comparable to i5s in terms of power, and that's being generous. Also, they'd have to rewrite MacOS to run on the new architecture, AND they'd fuck over a ton of developers in the process because apps built for MacOS would have to be recompiled at the very least if not rewritten all together.
-
Brolls31557y@sha-bang I think that’s totally doable, possibly even before then.
Performance wise, we know they’re capable of it, because their new round of A10 & A11 chips blow pretty much anything else out of the water.
Desktops and laptops having better power supplies and thermal management means they just have to scale them up pretty much.
Not much rewriting is needed either / they already know how to do most of it. iOS shares the same base kernel as OS X, and when it comes to software, all you *really* have to be able to do at the end of the day is map from one processor instruction set to the next. Probably not that much of a challenge for them. -
@sha-bang Aight, so in case I want a MacBook, I'll have to get one before 2020, thanks
-
Teknas27517yI believe Apple has never released a 64 bit chip. All they have is arm based processors for iphones
-
sha-bang3497y@Teknas yeah the idea is that they're going to make an ARM based chip to power Macs. ARM based chips are "efficiency first" so their low power consumption works very well for phones, but they currently come no where near x86 chips in terms of processing power. If they could develop an ARM based chip with the same processing power as x86 chips then that could be pretty revolutionary for high performance computing because power consumption would be less of an issue (it's currently a huge limitation for x86).
