@D--M because I'm sending a Google Doc to someone with instructions for a project and I need to embed a YouTube video.

what baffles me more is that you can't view the non printing characters in gdocs.
your youtube problem is easy solvable, make a screenshot of the youtube video player add the picture to the document and link it to the video. -
@heyheni but I shouldn't have to take a screenshot and link it, it's goddamn 2018. Maybe that solution is acceptable in a GitHub readme file but Google Docs is supposed to be a consumer facing product, not something I need to use hacky work arounds on. Hell even Microsoft Word 2013 supports embedding YouTube videos, and YouTube isn't even their own fucking product.

enoon4317yUse Google Slides. It embedded videos (even non-YT ones) quite nicely.
You can use as many slides as you want for the rest of the instructions or just one.
