Put some kind of course into the studies which makes students get in touch with open source technology.

May it be arduino's, open source languages, frameworks, whatever.

But especially teach them what open source stands for. I mean we already teach them how to work with closed source technology explicitly so let's show them the other side as well!

    But, closed sauce means it's less secure and that anyone can edit your program /s

    @inaba What on earth do you mean? 😅

    @inaba Why would open source be less secure according to you?

    Like swift and HomeKit?

    @IllSlapU Oh I'm not familiar with those kinda 'shortcuts' haha

    @Gerrymandered If they're entirely open source, sure!

    Yes! Also make requirements that force students to contribute to open source projects.

    Seriously! I'm in second year CS and most folks still don't know anything abt Github

    Yes please!! I’m a non traditional (read older) CS junior and my university has ONE course called ‘Linux system administration’ that teaches you absolute basics (how to customize your prompt, file permissions, etc.) I’m regularly teaching course mates what open source is, why to use it, differences between distros, etc. I have to explain how to use vim to edit my code to every TA I’ve ever met. Most of these kids don’t get off Windows/Netbeans *until they graduate*

    I have the privilege to already know a little bit about *nix operating systems, history, culture, FOSS and the GNU/Linux movement. I wish my classmates would be forced to learn the same. I’ve brought this up with professors and the response seems to just be “we don’t want to scare kids off with a terminal prompt and a history lesson” but then never cover this stuff and put out *professionals* with literally no FOSS/Linux experience at all. Grinds my gears.

    @linuxxx ah, miswrote :v

    Yeah, it was sarcasm. A lot of people at my school thinks that closed source === more secure and that you can definitely put 110% trust in it and the big companies
