I doubt this would happen to many software devs. excel is not as sought after as a normal developer

I don't think this is always by choice. In larger companies a developer may be forced to this by restrictions and constraints.

Oddly enough, some leaders, in some companies don't realize that vb script in excel is not ideal but since it's an "approved application" anyone can use it to their hearts content.
