I can't decide if I want to buy a macbook or a good quality windows laptop and run linux on it. My current laptop is way too old and slow so I need to buy a new one. Macbooks are way too overpriced with their €1500 imo and was more thinking of a €1000 budget. I mostly develop in Java and Python (and a lot of web development). What would you guys recommend?

Crapple MacBook or a ThinkPad.

Either buy some older MacBook (on eBay) where you still can upgrade Ram and build in some 2.5’ SSD, or buy some PC where drivers are available (ThinkPad, HP, Dell)

ThinkPad is what I usually recommend if you want linux. I hear the Dell xps is nice but I've never used one.

@ryanmhoffman are all thinkpads viable? I see some great i7 - 256gb ssd - 8gb ram - IPS displays for only €1000~ but they are really ugly imo.

@LouisPython They're pretty damn ugly, but the one I use at work is a pleasure to type on.
What I recommend you look out for the most are the screen and keyboard. That and good port selection if you're planning on doing some Software Defined Radio. Trust me, do not skimp on the keyboard and screen. A slow CPU is annoying at times, but a bad keyboard or screen will make you want to discard your laptop as soon as you try anything better. And poor IO may kill projects, it did for me.

@CptFox I have read and watched reviews of the Lenovo Thinkpad E570. Heard good things about it so far and the keyboard is supposedly nice. it's also 899 so probably a great bang for your buck.

@LouisPython yeah ThinkPads are known for playing nice with linux, pretty much any of them. And they aren't the prettiest computers but they are very sturdy and have the best keyboard imo.

I was in the same shoes a couple of weeks ago. Instead of going for a mac. I bought a refurbished dell with 6th gen i5 proc, 256 ssd and 8gb ram then installed linux mint on it. I havent encountered any problems since then.

The xps line up from Dell is also known for haveing grate linux support (Can confirmen).

Windows is tainted.

Well one thing i can say is that the return in terms of investment for Macbooks is really good considering that my main macbook has been running since 2013 with no problems whatsoever covering mobile development (both major platforms) and web development. Most of what I would want to do on a Linux machine can be done on my macbook but not the other way around.
