Yeah definitively unity and C#. If cheap 3D modelling/rigging/animation look into blender. For cheap sounddesign etc look into reaper and free VSTs. For images&textures there is GIMP (although I use photoshop, because nothing come close, sadly)...
Basically figure out what you want to do and start doing it. Every software above (except photoshop) is freely downloadable. I would suggest you get a basic knowledge about everything related to games. I focus on programming, but I also modeled, textured, rigged and animated and intergrated a character before etc. ( I make music as a hobby) -

You should definetively know stuff about:
3D modelling, polycount, quads and tris, what a vertex is etc.
Also: what are UVs, how do textures work, what kind of textures arw there?
What is a 3D character rig, how does it work? What are Joints and Constraints, what is weight painting, difference between FK and IK rigging... -
@ViktorZin you should at least have a basic understanding what all these things are, and thats really not too difficult. Then think about what game you want to make and do it.
Alot of people suggest starting small, and although I would not suggest creating the newest big MMO i wouldnt suggest a text adventure either. -
@calmyourtities unreal engine is great and all, but its not really beginner friendly. Yeah its also free so its possible to try. I dislike the whole blueprint stuff but it has some great features that Unity is lacking.
Also i realize that you were not serious but i thought i should comment seriously. -

@madoc huh.. sources... well just google the keywords, maybe in relation to the software you are using. Check out some unity youtube tutorials, I think the youtuber brackeys may be of use, although i personally dont like him very much. There are alot of tutorials out there that are beginner friendly, if you can spare a dime, check out udemy.com or pluralsight.com for paid courses. Also the Unity website has manuals and written and video tutorials for beginners. Also check out the youtube channel GDC (Game developer conference) although I doubt that you will understand anything they are talking about, because its a bit advanced most of the time.
